Family Stuff: Uncle Michael
We lost a beloved member of my wife’s family yesterday. Uncle Michael AKA round man passed away 4:00 12/10/2008. Life will definitely not be the same without his daily calls with his scripted conversations "What’s for supper""how’s the dog""how’s my sister" Oddly enough at the time the redundant conversations would drive family members crazy. But now I have to admit I for one will miss them terribly. He was also always very supportive of family members no matter what they were in to. He was always giving advice or encouragement or just asking what I was up to with my 55 Chevy. I personally am very glad that he was able to see his 67 dodge dart drag car run the 1/4 mile before he left us. Goodbye Uncle Michael we will miss you!
Tech Stuff:
Now that the website is up and finctioning for the most part it was time to turn my attention toward the inside of the network. Now that I am a dad I finally decided it is time to think about web content filtering (insert Big Brother comment here). Granted I deal with web content filtering daily as part of my job as a network administrator so I have a bit of a leg up over most people in this area. I needed to have the content filter be able to distinguish between domain users and non domain users on my network and also give different access levels to different members of my domain. Obviously the kids will be restricted and uncomputer savy adults will be stopped from hitting security vulnerability sites and then the super user who is totally unrestricted. At my job we rely on websense to handle this and it does a bang up job on all fronts. however it is a pretty heavy duty setup more than I would need for home use. But we gave it a shot any way as it integrates perfectly with the cisco pix firewall I run and setup was a snap! If you want to do something like this you will need a server for your filtering so this will not work for joe average home user.
Car Stuff:
The Dart is recieving some much needed attention. steve removed the motor and rebuilt the whole front suspension. New brakes, shocks, bushings, balljoints, etc. cleaned frame rails and fresh paint on it all. Also I nice new serpentine pulley set was ordered for the 440 so hopefully the incerdible flying fan belt will be a thing of the past! I will be taking pics and adding them to the photo section this weekend.
The 55... Steveand I decided to check out the bearings in the 283 while it was removed from the car. Well what we found was the answer to my low oil presure issue and spelled impending doom for the engine. The main bearings were all shot and the crank was scored pretty badly. the rod bearings were not in much better shape unfortunatly. Needless to say this threw quite a big wrench in my plans. I had planned on putting the 283 back in the car for a while so I could build the 350 that was given to me up slowly. with this development it was now full steam ahead ont he 350. so new rod and main bearings were ordered from summit and installed to freshen the motor. compression was checked everything was cleaned and is reassembled! Now I am painting and putting the goodies on it. so I should have a good powerplant by the time the car is back from paint! thank god!
Open Source Power Baby!
Well as most folks know I am a Linux/opensource fan. I think its because I am cheap at heart. Anyways I finally got ClamAV antivirus scanning working on my Linux Spam filter. I run ASSP On a fedora core box. It is not the most powerful machine in my dungeon however it manages to crunch the thousands of emails my domains get hammered with each day with ease. Who says you have to spend thousands of dollars to control spam and have antivirus coverage for a email server! Go Linux and GO open Source!
